Reprieve of budget cuts in sight: BOT approves tuition increases for 2012-13

The UNCW Board of Trustees approved a 6.5 percent tuition increase for the 2012-13 year and will recommend a "peer alignment" adjustment to tuition that will amount to a total increase of 10.7 percent. Fees will increase as well, but only minimally, at $9.50 per student. Full story

Gunman Paranoia

It seems as if school shootings have become a scary trend over the past few years. From Columbine to the Virginia Tech massacre to the recent shooting at Cape Fear High School in Fayetteville, N.C., these horrific shootings are happening all too often, and it's making people paranoid. Even at UNCW, a school where, news-wise, there isn't much excitement, we have been experiencing our own paranoia. On Nov. 15, an armed robbery took place at the Hardee's on S. College Road. The gunman fled towards campus after robbing one person at gunpoint in the Hardee's parking lot. Full story

Soaring to Greatness campaign over, $65 million goal surpassed

UNCW’s “Soaring to Greatness” campaign is now over, Chancellor Gary Miller announced today at a press conference. The campaign’s goal of raising $65 million has been met nearly a year ahead of schedule. The campaign raised $66.4 million total. Former Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo established “The Campaign for UNCW: Soaring to Greatness” in 2005 with a goal of raising $65 million for the university by the end of 2012—the university’s 65th anniversary. The final and public phase began in February 2011. Full story

Students plan protest at UNC Board of Governors meeting

A coalition of students plan to protest pending tuition increases at the UNC Board of Governors meeting scheduled for Feb. 10.

Known as NC Defend Education, the group claims the proposition and ratification of these tuition increases violates the North Carolina Constitution, particularly Article IX, Section 9; which states: "The General Assembly shall provide that the benefits of The University of North Carolina and other public institutions of higher education, as far as practicable, be extended to the people of the State free of expense."

This ominous warning met internet users across the country who attempted to access Wikipedia.com Jan. 18, 2012. In an effort to increase awareness about pending legislation which many feel would limit internet freedoms, the Wikipedia community opted to shut down the English version of the site for 24 hours.

State vs. federal: the battle over medical marijuana

The actions of four marines who were based at Camp Lejeune have been the subject of a lot of media attention this past week. They've been called "barbaric" by the President of Afghanistan, "against everything the military stands for" by Marine General John Allen, and put down by just about everyone who has heard about what they did.
