Issue date: 12/7/06 Section: News
The holiday season is the festive time when we are able to spend with family and friends. For most, shopping for that perfect gift is on the top of the to-do list. As we traverse through the hustle and bustle of the holidays, let's not forget the criminal element that loves to take advantage of the sometimes chaotic situations we find ourselves in. Stay observant and protect yourself and your valuables this holiday season.
While in the shopping center parking lot:•
- Park in well-lit areas
- After you have parked, become familiar with the location in order to return to the vehicle without delay
- Keep your vehicle locked at all times
- Use the trunk of vehicle to keep packages and valuables out of sight
- Have your vehicle key in hand while walking back to your vehicle
- Most malls and shops will assist shoppers by providing security escorts to vehicles when requested
- Attempt to limit the amount of items you carry out of the store. A lot of bulky items can draw attention to yourself and also limit your view of the surroundings.
- While approaching your vehicle, scan the area for any potential trouble. Look for suspicious persons in the area or people sitting in vehicles. If you notice something or someone that seems out of place, return to the store.
- Be aware of vehicles that may follow you from a store. If you feel you are being followed, use a cell phone to notify law enforcement, or attempt to drive to law enforcement facility
While in the store or mall:
- Try not to shop alone. Take a family member or meet a friend
- Be observant of your surroundings and carry a cell phone
- Look out for pickpockets. Only carry essential items and try to leave purses at home or locked in your vehicle's trunk. If you must carry a purse keep it and other valuables close to your body.
- Limit the amount of cash that you carry. Use a debit card. If you do carry cash attempt to keep money or wallets in your front pocket.
