Education and adventure merge at the Cameron Art Museum for the children of Wilmington. A new program, Kids @ Cam, is designed especially for families with kids ages 3-13. The program is held one Saturday a month from noon until 3 p.m., with volunteer opportunities available for UNCW students.
"We have themes centered on guest artists [or current exhibitions] … We have music days … and an upcoming theatre day in May," youth educator, Georgia Mastroieni said.
Each week, there are three events planned for the children who are divided into two age groups ranging from 3 to 7 and from 8 to 13. The groups take tours through the museum, complete gallery hunts and do art activities during their visits. Every aspect of the Kids @ Cam program is designed for children -- even the tour guides. Each month, Rachel Walter and Morgan Wittman, both 11, lead their peers through the exhibits at the museum.
"Being a [tour guide] has been a great experience. It was really fun leading the children and their parents through the gallery," Walter said. "It felt so good to be able to say I actually did it!"
The gallery hunts are available in both English and Spanish and designed differently for each age group. The art activities include crafts and projects participants can take home and use to create their own exhibits.
The program will continue over the summer with exciting agendas planned for the children.
"We're starting a summer camp this year," Mastroieni said. And beginning on the museum's five-year anniversary on April 28th, Broadway costume designer, Tony Award-winner and North Carolina native William Ivey Long's work will be on display through October. Although the program is always welcoming student volunteers, the Long exhibit will span through both wings of the museum, greatly increasing the program's need for volunteers during these months.
