Another year of art for UNCW

    UNCW continues the “Year of the Arts” tradition with more exciting performance and series announcements for the 2007-08 academic year. 
    The new season for the Leadership Lecture Series has been announced.  The Leadership Lecture Series involve prominent speakers who discuss global, political, cultural and social issues.  The upcoming series will begin October with world renowned writer Tim Flannery. 
    Flannery is an Australian writer and scientist best known for his book “The Weather Makers: The History and Future Impact of Climate Change.”  This book explores the truths and myths of climate change as well as the repercussions. 
    Flannery begins the lecture series and will be followed by Azar Nafisi, Jamaica Kincaid and Stephen Lewis. 
    The Arts in Action Performance Series for 2007-08 has also been announced.  The Arts in Action Performance Series is a diverse series that brings artists from all over the world to UNCW to perform. 
    The series will being with performances in September and October by the Latin American musical group ChocQuib Town, beat poet Erin McKeown, Mike Marshall and Darol Anger with the Woodshop Folkestra, and a dance performance by Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana.  The series will continue throughout the year with many other performers. 
    The Warwick Center Lobby Gallery will kick off the year with an exhibit beginning Aug. 22.  The exhibit will feature the Joel Fernando’s photographic sculpture. 
    Fernando is a UNCW graduate.  Following this exhibit, the gallery will house Tattoos!-Historic, Ethnic and Student Body Art in September. 
    The Theatre Department has also announced two of the shows to be performed on campus this season.  The shows are “Southern Girls” which follows several women during the civil rights movement and “Othello.”
    These opportunities and many others promise that this upcoming year will also for a year of the arts for UNCW.
