Voices of Leadership
Lt. James Watkins : UNCW Police
Issue date: 1/31/08 Section: Op/Ed
Starting in January 2008, the UNCW police department became an active participant in the North Carolina Governors Highway Safety Program. The mission of the program is to promote highway safety awareness and reduce the number of traffic crashes through the development and execution of safety programs.
University Police will be working in conjunction with state and local law enforcement agencies to promote safe driving in and around New Hanover County. The program works on a calendar of campaigns that stretch throughout the year and target impaired drivers, speeders, and focuses on seatbelt compliance. Campaign names include: Booze It and Lose It, Click It or Ticket, No Need To Speed, and Operation Slow Down.
Because traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for 16-24 year olds, we found the program of particular interest given that the majority of our student population falls within that age bracket. We hope that the program will assist us in educating our community on the importance of safe driving.
The campaign schedule can be found at www.ncdot.org/programs/ghsp/.
