University Police arrested six students Tuesday on drug-related charges stemming from an investigation dating back to late February.

At approximately 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, police arrested four freshmen residents of Galloway Hall. Daniel Joseph Smith, 19, was charged with two counts of possession with intent to manufacture, sell or distribute marijuana. He was also charged with selling approximately three grams of the drug to an undercover police officer Feb. 28 and March 11.

Elijah Russell Sams, 18, was charged with two counts of possession with intent to manufacture, sell or distribute marijuana and selling to an undercover police officer on March 14 and March 25. According to the arrest warrant, Sams is also charged with two counts of maintaining a vehicle that was used for keeping and selling marijuana.

Barrett Daniel Joyner, 19, was charged with possession with intent to manufacture, sell or distribute ecstasy, a Schedule I drug. Possession of ecstasy typically carries stiffer penalties than possession of a Schedule IV drug like marijuana. Joyner was also charged with selling the ecstasy to an undercover police officer on April 18.

Nineteen-year-old James Loren Young was charged with possession with intent to manufacture, sell or distribute a Schedule IV prescription drug. Young was also charged for selling the narcotic to an undercover police officer on April 2.

Police arrested two other students later Tuesday.

Twenty-year-old sophomore commuter student Rachael Lane Yenney was charged with possession with intent to manufacture, sell or distribute psilocybin mushrooms, also considered a Schedule I narcotic. Yenney was also charged with selling nearly five grams of the mushrooms to an undercover officer.

On-campus resident Jacob Allen Wittmer, 19, was charged with growing marijuana. He was also charged with misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, grow lights, planting soil and three growing planters.

In addition to facing the charges from the state, the six students will most likely be referred to the Dean of Students Office for judicial action.

According to Chief David Donaldson of the University Police, the investigation began as a result of anonymous tips and information gained by police officers in the residence halls on their regular rounds.

"This investigation began because the officer was well-suited for this," Donaldson said. "If we had the opportunity to start another investigation tomorrow, we would."

College kids do drugs? Get outta town! And why stop at marijuana anyway? Let's just illegalize the whole Earth and all of its plants. Meanwhile, we have unjust war and oil companies profiting like never before, but who cares about those things when we got people getting high and enjoying life, right?

Please, the only real criminals here are the slimy undercover cops. (Continued…)

Wow, way to cover up half the article with handcuffs, you guys are really hardcore. I got an idea, instead of busting kids for selling plants that grow naturally on half the planet, why don't you go after people who do more than just get high and play video games? Wait. (Continued…)

I really disagree with the cops idiotic plan of busting a few students in Galloway for doing a favor for an undercover scum of society! Grow up and realize that people have the right to do what they want and even though drugs are outlawed undercover cops are the true criminals that won't live long and won't live happy. (Continued…)

I can see that the editorial staff of this P.O.S. newspaper is only interested in posting pro-drug comments. Thats nice. I'm sure attorneys would be glad to see this. (Continued…)

Arresting a mortal being for Marijuana Manufacturing is like arresting someone for Manufacturing Chickens. What an asinine legal term which is designed to spread ignorance among those who would rather not learn for themselves. (Continued…)

I like how the people who feel so strongly against these kids are so angry and the other( " pro weed" as you call it ) are much more peaceful with their responses. (Continued…)

The students broke the law and are getting punished. I'm sorry that this seems like such a harsh thing but that is what they get for breaking the law. (Continued…)
