Greenville | Following a weekend offensive explosion for the UNCW baseball team, the Seahawks' bats were met with a Stihl curtain on Tuesday night against East Carolina as the Pirates topped the Seahawks 6-1.
ECU freshman pitcher Stihl Sowers (4-3) tossed a complete game, allowing just six hits and one run while striking out five. Sowers' bid for a shutout was broken by Mark Carver's 14th home run of the season with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.
The game moved along quickly, as a pitchers duel until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Pirates (28-13) plated four runs with two outs to push their advantage to 5-0.
The offensive fireworks started with Ryan Wood's single and he advanced to second when Wilmington product Stephen Batts walked. Corey Kemp knocked in Wood, and Brandon Henderson sent in Batts next with a single. Jamie Ray was next up and also singled and advanced to second on an error, sending Kemp to the plate. Henderson scored on a balk from UNCW pitcher Kyle Lewis (3-1).
UNCW (29-9-1) got two hits out of designated hitter Shane French, who raised his average to .333.
An encouraging sign came in the ninth for the Seahawks when reliever Larry Salefsky worked his way out of out of a bases-loaded jam with no outs, striking out Kemp and inducing two ground balls.
The Seahawks return to the field this weekend to take on New York Tech and play host to East Carolina on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
