Democratic Party candidates running for numerous elected positions gathered to meet their constituents, including UNCW's College Democrats, at Hugh McCrae Park Saturday, Sept. 20.
"Any time we have the opportunity to get together it really helps the party out," said chairman for the New Hanover County democrats Jim Morgan.
Candidates such as Reverend Jonathan Barfield, who is running for county commissioner, and Pat Chappell, a candidate for school board, attended along with Julia Boseman, a candidate for North Carolina State Senate.
"It's going to be a tight race but we are up in the polls and we are excited about that," Boseman said to an excited crowd.
Representatives from Obama's presidential campaign, Kay Hagan for the U.S. Senate campaign and Sam J. Ervin IV for the Court of Appeals campaign, were present as well. Attendees shared campaigning ideas and discussed different ways to coordinate for candidates.
The conversation ranged from various topics such as the excitement of the election year and issues at hand to the best recipes for making lima beans.
Although few citizens came out to the park, the ones who did were eager to learn about the candidates and were able to actually meet and speak with them individually.
"I think it is my duty as a member of the community to learn about all the issues and where the candidates stand and to be as involved as possible," said Nate Campbell, a member of the UNCW College Democrats, "and an event like this is a great way to accomplish that."
The event was hosted by the H10 and W18 precincts of the New Hanover County democrats. The precincts in New Hanover County take turns hosting a variety of events to help promote the Democratic Party in numerous ways.
"The precincts got together for the candidates so that they would have the opportunity to meet with the citizens here before Election Day," said Myrna Wexler, a volunteer taking donations and signing up volunteers.
A donation from citizens is requested but not required at events such as these at Hugh McCrae Park. The money was not to go to the candidates who were running, but to the New Hanover County democrats so they can continue to host events.
There are numerous events to be held in the near future and it was clear that the New Hanover Country democrats were prepared to go full force for the cause until Election Day.
"You know what a history election year this is," said Morgan while addressing candidates and citizens simultaneously. "We cannot let this slip through our fingers."

One of the biggest targets for politicians, as far as economics are concerned, is becoming the payday loan industry. Governors across the country are trying to rid their states of the industry altogether, and so far, Georgia, North Carolina, and Oregon have succeeded. (Continued…)

This is a great election to vote in. I think that Obama should have chosen Clinton as running mate, even if the Muslims would not have liked it. Since McCain chose Palin, we are dealing with sexism and racism in America. (Continued…)

Well written article. But, how come I never hear any Republican related news from Student Media? Democrats this, democrats that. I know that the majority of college students (and professors) lean liberal but c'mon, objectivity?!? Who writes this stuff, Keith Olbermann?

Why didn't anyone notice that it is McRae, not McCrae? A little fact checking goes a long way.
And kudos to Mr. Bi-Partisan. There were TWO articles focusing on Democrats (Kay Hagan rally and NC Lt. (Continued…)

Can someone actually tell me of any republican related events that go on, on campus or in Wilmington?

Mr. Dem,
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't John McCain in Wilmington on Monday? I'd say that's a Republican related event.
And for the record, it's not that I have a problem with the coverage of Democrat related events. (Continued…)
