A new music course entitled Exploring Music: Culture in Costa Rica will be offered this spring, including a trip to Costa Rica over Spring Break. It will be taught by Ms. Marina DeRatmiroff and Dr. Daniel Johnson.

DeRatmiroff said, "Dr. Daniel Johnson proposed we team-teach and take a section of MUS 106 (Exploring Music) to Costa Rica in order to expose students to music in another environment and culture."

DeRatmiroff has been teaching MUS 106 for the past two years, yet this is the first time a section such as this has been offered to UNCW students.

This class, focusing on Costa Rican culture and music, will be successful according to DeRatmiroff because "Dr. Johnson has close affiliation to their major university, and because [DeRatmiroff is] a native Venezuelan and, consequently, fluent in Spanish."

This course encompasses the fundamental components of music, including the study of musical notation, listening experiences, the piano keyboard and related topics.

Dr. Johnson said he has "traveled to Costa Rica several times during the past few years when [he] taught workshops at the University of Costa Rica for music teachers throughout Central America."

He is eager to be teaching this class because he "wants to share [his] experience of traveling to this wonderful country, with particular emphasis on music and related culture."

DeRatmiroff and Johnson both believe the course will be successful because non-music majors can take it and learn a lot about music and culture.

"The course is designed for students who wish to increase their knowledge and understanding of music, for elementary education majors, public school teachers seeking re-certification and music students who wish to prepare for MUS111," DeRatmiroff said.

Students interested in registering need little to no musical background, or strong understanding of the Spanish language; however, some Spanish comprehension is recommended for the Spring Break trip. It is mandatory for students to attend this trip to Costa Rica, from March 7-14, in order to successfully complete the class.

The course constitutes as a basic study and credit goes toward all basic studies, not just fine arts. There will be an information session regarding the class Oct. 30 from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Cultural Arts building room 1080.
