UNCW hosted the 7th annual Landfall Tradition golf tournament at the Landfall country club last Friday through Sunday. The Jack Nicholas course saw 24 men's and women's teams over the three day tournament, with prominent Division I competitors on both sides. For the women, UNC Chapel Hill (10), Wake Forest (12), Ohio State (14), Florida (22), N.C. State (29) and Notre Dame (28) posed the biggest threat to the lady Seahawks. On the men's side, Iowa, Tulsa (24), Virginia Commonwealth (48) and (52) Virginia Tech were the dominant teams over the weekend.

UNCW's men and women had two very different results after the final round ended on Sunday. The men shot a respectable 915 for the tournament, considering the windy conditions and slick greens after heavy rain on Saturday. They finished fifth in the 12-team event. UNCW's Derek Wallace led the way for the Seahawks as he finished tied for ninth overall. The women on the other hand struggled against the tough filed, finishing just 10th.

"It was a disappointing weekend," senior Christie Appleton said. "We felt prepared and we fought hard. We just didn't come out with the result we wanted."

The UNCW's women fell victim to tough competition over the weekend. UNC and N.C. State tied for second in the Mercedes-Benz Women's Golf Championship hosted by the University of Tennessee two weeks ago at Fox Den Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn. Also Notre Dame and Ohio St. finished in the top six at their respective tournaments last week as well.

"This is a challenging course with challenging competitors," Appleton said. "You have to bring your A-game each day because every team is so solid."

After Sunday's final round Iowa emerged as the top team for the men, and defending women's champion Wake Forest found itself atop Landfall's leaderboard for the second year in a row.

The Hawkeyes shot a 24 over 888 for the weekend on their way to the men's championship. They had three players finish in the top seven overall, led by Vince India who finished second. They finished 12 shots better than runner up Tulsa.
