Rocking out to fight breast cancer

Glicker was the featured speaker at the Rock for the Cure Breast Cancer Benefit Concert. At seven months pregnant, she was diagnosed with breast cancer only two months after it killed her mother. After treatment, she became cancer free until 2005, when she was told it had spread to her lungs and lymph nodes. Yet still going strong, she is 36 months into living with cancer. Although she receives treatment from a new drug every 21 days, she has overcome breast cancer in her own way.
"This is not the end, this is the beginning. This is a story of hope," Glicker said.
Rock for the Cure, hosted by the Communication Studies Society, featured Schoolboys, a band made up of UNCW professors, playing familiar tunes such as Hootie and The Blowfish's "Hold My Hand."
"The Schoolboys really enjoyed playing, and this is their way of giving back to the community," said Amanda Frasca, co-coordinator of the event.
The event also included a raffle and a silent auction to generate donations. Items from the Charlotte Bobcats, Fergie, Kate Voegele , Sam Ash Music, the cast of "The Office" and two electric guitars were donated for the silent auction. The raffle included Reef ladies sandals, Rock for the Cure T-shirts and more. The profit will be donated to the New Hanover Regional Medical Center Foundation's Pink Ribbon fund.
"Seeing everybody turn out tonight is great. I hope it creates a bigger awareness for everyone because it is a devastating disease for women. I hope everyone has a great time donating to a good cause," Frasca said.
