Despite the rain and a move to Hanover Gym, 500 students attended the second annual Hullaballoo Nov. 13. The event was held as a kickoff to support the men's basketball team in their first home game of the season. Funded by the Student Government Association and sponsored by campus wide organizations, the Hullabaloo was an affair to promote school spirit and offer a chance to get to know the 2008-2009 men's basketball team.

"The Hullabaloo really gives the basketball team a chance to see the support they have from the student body," said Hullabaloo coordinator Jenna Roney. "It gives students another opportunity to interact with different facets of our athletic department, outside of typical athletic events."

Along with various campus organizations promoting their associations, the audience was entertained with multiple performances. The first and second place winners of Midnite Madness' "UNCW's Got Talent" performed in the Hullabaloo. First place winner, Physical Grafeeti, performed on stage followed by UNCW's a cappella group, High-Seas. The bookstore provided contest giveaways such as teal rainbows and T-shirts. Freshmen Council, Team Teal, RHA and ACE participated in the Hullabaloo as sponsors and set up tables with a variety of games.

The Hullabaloo was helpful in encouraging students to attend athletic events and proudly represent UNCW with enthusiasm and school spirit.

"When we see that so many people support us, it is a really good feeling," Jeralds said. "I love interacting with fellow students and letting them know that just because we play basketball here, we're just like everyone else."

Even the soccer team was recognized for hosting the 2008 CAA championship game.

"It felt really good to be recognized because it was the first time something like that has happened for the men's soccer team, and the Hullabaloo helped to get more fans in the stands," junior forward Devan Carroll said. "The recognition felt well deserved because of all of the hard work we've put into our game."

I was at the Hullobaloo basically the whole time. That event was so lame! By the time the basketball team came out there were only like 60 people there. (Continued…)
