After opening CAA play with a dominating 12-point victory against Georgia State, the UNCW women's basketball team fell to 17-time conference champ Old Dominion, 79-70. The Seahawks dropped to 7-6 on the season and 1-1 in the CAA.

The Lady Monarchs rotated between a man, 2-3, and 1-3-1 zone, making it difficult for UNCW to ever firmly establish its offense. The confusing defense caused 19 turnovers for the Seahawks and allowed for a shooting percentage of only 37 percent for the game.

The most troubling statistic for UNCW, however, was rebounding. The Seahawks were out-rebounded 42-29 and gave Old Dominion 18 offensive boards. Head Coach Ann Hancock noted that rebounding proved to be a key concern for UNCW in the home loss. "A lot of the major categories between the two teams were even with the exception of rebounding. The Lady Monarchs got 55 percent of their offensive rebounds and you don't give yourself a chance to be successful when you allow a team to get that many second-chance opportunities," Hancock said.

The Lady Monarchs held a strong advantage in second chance points, leading the Seahawks 22-9 in that category. The Seahawks have been on the losing end of the rebounding battle in eight of their 13 games and have seen their opponents average seven more rebounds in the past three games.

In order to practice rebounding techniques, Hancock has her players boxing out some unfamiliar opponents. "We have been able to go a group of male practice players that have helped us simulate of the bigger and more athletic players in the league," she said. "Our rebounding troubles against Old Dominion were due to the Lady Monarchs' size and athleticism."

Continued work with male practice players will hopefully prove to be beneficial for the Seahawks as they continue through CAA play.

Old Dominion came into Trask Coliseum having never lost to the Seahawks. Dating back to the 1991-1992 season, the Lady Monarchs are 38-0 against UNCW. Leading 47-41 with 13:23 to go in the second half, the Seahawks had an opportunity to finally get a victory against one of the most dominating teams in the history of the CAA; however, Old Dominion went on a 24-7 run and the Seahawks never regained the momentum with which they opened the second half.

Senior Sahsha Taylor did her part for the Seahawks as she matched her season high with 19 points and seven rebounds. She now needs just six points to become UNCW's fifth all-time leading scorer. The 6-foot-tall forward from Charlotte, North Carolina currently has amassed 1,284 points for the Seahawks.
