Members of PRIDE, UNCW's gay-straight alliance group, chalked the sidewalks on campus Aug. 18, only to find their messages defaced later that night.

The PRIDE chalkings on Chancellor's Walk were altered in a manner that ranged from vulgar drawings to discriminatory comments directed toward the LGBTIQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and questioning) community.

"One of our main goals is gaining acceptance and equality on campus for LGBTIQ students," PRIDE president Caitlin Breither said.

Currently, there are no leads on the individual/s responsible for the vandalism of the PRIDE chalkings. Board members of PRIDE have since met with the Assistant Dean of Students and the Associate Provost of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion, who condemn the act and any intentional intimidation of LGBTIQ students.

"The 2009/10 [PRIDE] executive board decided that we would start the school year with a bang - make sure people knew that the organization existed, that we weren't only for LGBTIQ [lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and questioning] students, and that we're very ally friendly. So we decided to chalk," Breither said.

The group chose approximately 50 messages such as "Closets are for Clothes" and "Homosexual Agenda: Hang out with friends, Get equal rights, and buy books for class," designed to promote awareness of the issues many young LGBTIQ students face.

The defacing occurred the same week a campus wide email was sent out encouraging all students, faculty, and staff to practice the Seahawk Respect Compact. The Seahawk Respect Compact, according to a message from Chancellor DePaolo, "promotes inclusiveness, mutual respect, acceptance, and open-mindedness among students, faculty, staff and the broader community." The Respect Compact hangs in every classroom across campus.

"In lieu of this incident, PRIDE will be chalking once a month and welcomes anyone in the UNCW community to come and join us," explains Breither. "This reminds us that while UNCW strives to be a welcoming and accepting campus, it still has a way to go. As members of the UNCW community we must step up and fight for those who are being oppressed and treated unkindly," she added.

This is disgusting. Great job to who ever did this, way to represent UNCW as a bunch of ignorant bigots. Also, congratulations on being cowards and not taking responsibility for your actions. (Continued…)
