UNCW was recently added to G. I. Job's list of the top Military Friendly Schools for 2010. According to the magazine, the list is comprised of the top 15 percent of colleges and universities that are "doing the most to embrace America's veterans as students."
This announcement comes after two new boards, the Military Advisory Board and the Military Task Force, have been implemented to make transition and attendance to UNCW easier for active duty service members, their spouses and veterans.
"The Military Advisory Board consists of active duty military commanders and local leaders who continually communicate the needs of the military to us, so we can take appropriate steps. The Military Task Force creates or modifies UNCW policies and procedures to enhance our services and programs for the military affiliated population," Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo said in a press release interview.
UNCW has various other programs and organizations designed to assist members of the military, veterans and military spouses.
UNCW's Onslow Extension Program provides service members stationed in that area with the additional option to attend classes without having to leave town. The program, which has locations in the city of Jacksonville and on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, offers six bachelor degrees, two graduate degrees and teacher licensure programs.
Other campus organizations are designed with student veterans in mind. On Friday, Aug. 21, the Student Veterans Organization (SVO), along with the Military Advisory Board, held a reception in the Burney Center to welcome incoming veterans. The reception was held so student veterans could make military connections at UNCW to aid them throughout their college careers.
"One of our main goals is to help veterans with adjusting from military to college life," said SVO's vice president, Bryce McLaughlin.
The SVO also sponsors charity events such as last year's Sports for Soldiers and holds an annual Veterans Day ceremony on campus to honor those who have served.
"These type events give me a chance to interact with other veterans and peers who have experienced some of the same things I have," veteran and UNCW student Stephen Vogt said.
According to Assistant Dean of Students Amy Hector, who also serves as SVO's advisor, the organization is planning several such events for the upcoming year.
UNCW further helps service members with earning their degrees by awarding college credit for some of the training they received in the military and by waiving basic physical education requirements.
"Just having people at the school who understand the additional stress that can be involved in going from being in the military, to becoming a student has been really helpful for me." Vogt added.

It is important that why we need a standing army be understood. It is also important that those in the military be understood by the public at large. It is no less important that students and members of the military understand the danger of our current military-industrial complex, which we were so urgently warned about by one of our most successful Generals.
