"[The theatre department] wanted to use a production to deal with issues of a multicultural society," said Grimes. Our Lady of 121st Street, which will be performed February 25 through March 1, is directed by Dr. Renee Vincent, who is an expert in acting training and acting theory.
Ending the season will be Dead Man's Cell Phone, a new play by Sara Ruhl. The play is a tale of a young woman named Jean who comes across-you guessed it-a dead man's cell phone. In finding this man's cell phone, and in attempting to take care of the dead man's loose ends, Jean unwittingly embarks on a wild odyssey of self-discovery. Dead Man's Cell Phone is a dark comedy and a biting social satire on the times we live in and the disconnect we create due to our reliance on technology.
"Sara Ruhl is an exciting new playwright that brings a feminine comic sensibility," said Grimes. Dead Man's Cell Phone will be performed April 22 through April 26 and will be directed by Dr. Paul Castagno, who is an expert in playwriting and in Comedia del Arte. He has previously directed Scapino for the UNCW stage.
"This year we are doing new plays and classic plays in new ways," Grimes said. This interesting compilation of plays should prove to be both entertaining and intellectually interesting to UNCW students as well as the Wilmington community.
