New Hanover High School's Lyceum Academy is currently hosting their 11th annual haunted house, with this year's theme being "Mardi Gras Misfortune."
Gordon Massengill established the Lyceum Academy in 1998 for junior and senior students who excel in their studies. The annual haunted house has been the biggest fundraiser for these students. 100 percent of the proceeds go towards funding for trips and learning opportunities outside the classroom. The students of the Lyceum Academy put everything for this project together.
"[The students] create the theme, the storyline, the set and everything" Massengill said. "Every year is unique and different. They all work really hard."
"You start the tour by standing in a room with a fortune teller who puts a curse on you," said Massengill. "Then you are led through the house to try and find a way out of the curse." According to Massengill, the details of the haunted house this year are the best they have ever been.
Alex Cordaro is a senior at Lyceum Academy who has been working behind the scenes of the haunted house for two years now. According to her, the best part about working on a project like this is, "seeing everyone's reactions and knowing that all of our hard work was well paid off." Just this year the haunted house has brought more people in than ever before.
"So far we have had 1,400 people and we still have a week to go," said Massengill. "Saturday, October 24 we reached our record high of 479 people in just one night."
"The lines were huge" said Madison Ganey, another senior student working behind the scenes. "[Saturday night] we had people waiting in line for over two hours just to get in."
"The haunted house has taken months to plan and about two weeks to build," said Massengill. "It has been our best haunted house yet."
The Lyceum Academy's haunted house is located at the old Circuit City on Market Street (next to IHOP). The last days to get a good scare will be Oct. 29 through Oct. 31. Doors open at 7 p.m. The cost is $10 at the door, cash only.

Hi Rachel,
Although The Lyceum Academy's haunted house event is next to IHOP, please do not patronize IHOP before or after. I used to go to IHOP with my family, but now we may want to keep in mind that the company has been exposed for animal cruelty and food safety issues in its supply chain. (Continued…)
