UNCW students have expressed their desire for a bigger Student Recreation Center (SRC) with increased space, equipment and recreation, and come fall 2010 they will begin to see the beginning of what they asked for.
In 2005, discussions of the SRC expansion were brought up, and currently the renovation process remains in the design phase.
"The budget hasn't been a huge factor, but definitely a concern," said Director of Campus Recreation Tim McNeilly.
The current SRC is expected to undergo quite a facelift come fall of next year, offering many more amenities to students that the current building does not provide.
According to McNeilly, the renovated SRC will add additional multipurpose courts, racquet ball courts and group exercise rooms, triple the size of fitness space and equipment, have an indoor lap pool, and an outdoor recreation pool in the shape of a Seahawk.
"Student feedback about size, overcrowding and certain things they wanted in the facility led to the expansion," McNeilly said.
The renovation will expand towards the back of the building and stop before the bridge that leads to the gazebo and sand volleyball courts. A recent renovation made to the SRC was a new floor in the fitness area. A teal- and navy-speckled floor, made from 80 percent recycled rubber, was laid down. The excess was then cut into coaster-sized squares and handed out to students.
The revamped SRC will be paid for through student fees, and the current space will remain the same overall. Currently, the SRC has three basketball courts, a 28-foot-high rock climbing wall, a track, group exercise rooms and free weights.
The Student Recreation Center offers many group exercise programs to students, faculty and staff including Pilates, Awesome Abs, Yoga and Kickboxing. The schedules for each class can be found at the SRC's Web site.
The Discovery Outdoor Center which offers adventure trips such as kayaking and backpacking is also located in the SRC. Registration is on a first-come-first-serve basis and those interested can sign up in the center's office, located on the first floor of the SRC.
