JACKSONVILLE, N.C. -- Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo met with Dr. Jill Biden to discuss the partnership between UNCW and Coastal Carolina Community College earlier this month. Dr. Biden is the wife of Vice President Biden as well as a teacher at a D.C.-area community college.

"This was a wonderful opportunity to highlight what we are doing to partner with community colleges and to serve military personnel here in southeastern North Carolina," DePaolo said.

President of Coastal Carolina Community College (CCCC), Ron Lingle, was also part of the meeting that had students from each campus and military personnel talk about the partnership between UNCW and CCCC.

"[This] was something that she was very interested in," DePaolo said.

Biden's visit was part of a program that President Obama has asked her to lead to raise awareness about the critical roles of the nation's community colleges.

"Dr. Biden seemed to be completely 'caught up in the moment' and engaged the students and faculty members energetically with their follow-up questions and comments," Lingle said.

The discussion centered on the "2 plus 2" program between UNCW and CCCC. Students take the first two years of courses through CCCC and can then transfer to UNCW to complete a four-year undergraduate degree.

During the meeting, DePaolo talked with Dr. Biden about taking the "2 plus 2" program to the next level. They discussed funding and wanting to add a building on CCCC's campus for the program. DePaolo also gave Biden a book by Clyde Edgerton, a creative writing professor at UNCW.
"Chancellor DePaolo summarized the entire presentation so brilliantly," Lingle said. "Her comments put a perfect exclamation point at the end of a very heartfelt and moving presentation by the students and instructors."
After visiting CCCC, Biden then visited Marines who were about to be deployed at Camp Lejeune. Her visit with the Marines was followed by lunch with the Wounded Warriors before ending with briefings on the range of programs and services that are provided by Marine Corps Family Services at the base.

"President Obama could not have chosen a better national spokesperson for his community college awareness initiative," Lingle said. "Dr. Biden is knowledgeable, experienced, thoughtful, articulate, deeply concerned and has a lot of passion and personal charisma."
