Rose has displayed a balance of leadership and confidence while on the typical freshman learning curve. "I was nervous at first," she said. "Soccer at the college level is much more physical than in high school and the pace of play is a lot faster, too. I feel like the preseason really helped me out a lot as far as getting acclimated."

Most don't even know about her being mentioned in Sports Illustrated; that's mainly due to her modesty. Rose was included in the magazine's "Faces in the Crowd" section which highlighted her illustrious high school career.

"I didn't even know I had been mentioned in the magazine at first. My mom e-mailed me and told me to check my e-mail. I didn't even check it at first and finally, after a couple of days, I saw that I was in Sports Illustrated," she said.

Rose didn't even bring it up to her teammates or head coach Paul Cairney. As a typical freshman, she attempted to keep a low profile about it, but Cairney had other plans. "We were in a team meeting and Paul brought it up during the team meeting to congratulate me. My teammates congratulated me, too and were very excited for me. It was cool," she said.

Despite her successes thus far Rose is very driven athletically. She has brought her competitive attitude and team-first mentality to UNCW. The Seahawks are currently 10-7-1 on the year and Rose leads the team with seven goals, having only taken 15 shots on goal. Cairney is pleased with the freshman's production so far this season. "Stephanie came in to this year in good shape," he said. "She's gotten better with every game and every practice. Opponents look out for her now."

As the women's Seahawk soccer team prepares for the 2009 CAA tournament, only time will tell what on-field magic Rose will pull out of the hat. Rose values the support of her teammates and realizes she couldn't be where she is currently if it weren't for them.

"It's all about teamwork and my teammates," she said. "Everyone has pushed me to work hard and get me to where I am. We have great team chemistry and I'm thankful for all of my teammates."

Rose aims to not only better herself, but also help the team get better overall. "I plan to work hard in the upcoming off-season on my personal game by working on various skills: my touch, shooting and more technical skills," she said. "I definitely learned about being a leader on the team from some of my teammates, and always giving 110 percent at all times. I've gained even more of a hard-working mentality during the season and from my teammates."

The UNCW women's soccer team, along with Stephanie Rose, hope to carry that hard-working mentality with them into the upcoming CAA tournament.
