According to the award's Web site, "The Telly awards honor the very best local, regional, and cable television commercials and programs, as well as the finest video and film productions, and work created for the Web."
"The World at Large" is hosted by Dr. Raymonde Kleinberg, an associate professor for the Department of Public and International Affairs, and is a Q & A show helping students and local citizens develop an understanding for issues facing the world today. The show covers a wide spectrum of world news and encompasses many aspects of political and social issues.
"The show was an idea of mine years ago. There were so many interesting people coming on campus, and the university TV would record some interviews," Kleinberg said. "I proposed that we have an ongoing program because we had so many guests on campus. We met on a regular basis with public service and finally established the show."
"There was a regular flow of experts on campus and students would help recruit so it became something students could get involved in and be a part of. It became a well-oiled machine so to speak," Kleinberg said.
According to the Oct. 21 press release, "The program is a collaboration of the UNCW Division of Public Services and the Department of Public and International Affairs. As part of the department's Great Decision course, experts in various fields presented lectures to students, and were interviewed for the World about current challenges facing the world. Topics discussed have involved issues such as human rights, world hunger, global politics and economics, and international law."
"The show tries to firstly bring the community some of the expertise coming onto campus. We do this through one-on-one interviews and debates," Kleinberg said.
"We also attempt to grapple some of the international issues we are dealing with today and bring experts in to tell us about these issues."
Guests have included Hekmat Karzai, the director of the Centre for Conflict and Peace Studies and first cousin to Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai, General Dan McNeill, a four star general who has served as the Commander of Coalition forces in Afghanistan, and David Johnson who founded Silent Images, which according to their Web site is "a nonprofit organization that tells stories of hope in the midst of persecution, poverty or oppression through journalistic photography, videography and writing."
"The producers and everyone have been so wonderful about doing this, and I am floored by the award," Kleinberg said. "We have had so much support by the university. The chancellor is talking about making the show statewide."
This was the second Telly award received by the media department of UNCW. Last year the documentary "The Marines of Montford Point" also received this prestigious award.
