Food for Hunger, a nonprofit organization, teamed up with local and national celebrities and held the first Celebrity Flag Football Tournament fundraiser Saturday, Nov. 14, at Hoggard High School.
"I had a blast and it was for a good cause," said Brandon Luck, a celebrity team member known for his roles in the Wilmington-based series Hollywood East and Whittaker Bay. "I'm definitely going to be sore tomorrow," he added.
Four teams competed in the tournament, including the All Stars, the Beach Bumz, United States Marines and even a team of boys from UNC Wilmington. During the first game, the Beach Bumz dominated the Marines and moved on to the finals. The UNC Wilmington team triumphed over the celebrity All Stars to join the Beach Bumz in the final game. The Beach Bumz, having the most experience in flag football, went on to take the title.
"The proceeds generated from this event will go towards funding an event the day before Thanksgiving Day that will give the homeless and individuals in need of a holiday meal," said Timothy Woodward, Jr. in a statement released to potential business sponsors. Woodward, also a cast member of Whittaker Bay and Hollywood East, planned the event alongside Mary Grace and Tyler Skipper.
A number of local and national celebrities participated in the tournament. Antwon "Skills" Tanner of "One Tree Hill," Wesley Jonathan of "What I Like About You," David Andrews of "Terminator III" and "Fight Club," Dominic Santana of "Whittaker Bay," and several cast members of the upcoming Wilmington-based national series "Hollywood East" made up the celebrity All Stars team.
As the Celebrity Flag Football Tournament fundraiser, the event was somewhat overlooked by the people of Wilmington. Despite plugs made by Woodward on Good Morning Carolina and Z107.5 FM and heavy online networking and word-of-mouth promotion via Facebook, the bleachers at Hoggard High's football stadium were dishearteningly vacant.
