Norman, a soprano who gained fame with her role in "Aida," has performed before presidents and royalty alike. She debuted in 1983 with the Metropolitan Opera.
"This is an opportunity to hear one of the truly remarkable musicians of our generation on our very own campus," said Norman Bemelmans, director of the Office of Cultural Arts at UNCW.
With Norman commanding ticket prices up to $75 dollars, UNCW students have a unique opportunity to see a world renowned artist for the student ticket price of $15.
"We made a calculated effort to keep student prices low to encourage them to attend," said Bemelmans.
According to Bemelmans, Norman's is a voice that "by itself will fill the halls," and the program to be presented will be an extra incentive for students.
"This program is something new for her, called American Masters," Bemelmans said. The first half will include classic examples of jazz and musical theater from Duke Ellington to Rodgers & Hammerstein, with the second half bringing traditional American spiritual pieces, such as the familiar "Ev'ry Time I Feel the Spirit" and "Go Down, Moses."
Norman has recently branched out into the musical community, working with familiar hip-hop and R&B groups such as The Roots, and Bill T. Jones, choreographer to the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.
"Having such an astounding musician come to UNCW is really a great opportunity for our community to experience world class artistry right here on campus. Performances like these only occur once every so often," said junior Jacob Roer, Association for Campus Entertainment Concerts chair.
Tickets for the event are still available through the Kenan Auditorium box office.
