"I've been with Dub Idol since it began. It's amazing to see how it has grown. It's great that it is sold out," said senior Tee Jackson before the show.
"I'm here to see Cam Dailey, one of my students from the Freshman Seminar class I taught last semester, but I've heard some of the talent as a preliminary judge and it is going to be a great show," said Dean of Students Dr. Michael Walker. "I'm here every year and every year it gets bigger and better."
All 10 contestants opened to their group rendition of Journey's "Don't Stop Believin." A white-gloved tribute to Michael Jackson was in order when hosts Karen Kleber and Jordan Sasser took the stage. They introduced the evenings "UNCW celebrity judges," Area Residence Coordinator Russel Craze, Vice Chancellor Pat Leonard, and Director of Housing Brad Reid.
The UNCW Gospel Choir performed their version of "I'll Be There" by the Jackson 5. The male competitors hit the stage next with hip-hop from Jay Sean, singing "Down." The females matched the men with their version of "Halo" by Beyonce.
Finally, the competitors brought their solo acts to center stage beginning with sophomore, Whitney Kornegay, representing the Belk and University Apartments area, who sang a capella.
"It was a little scary being first and singing in front of that many people." Kornegay said. "I'm definitely coming back next year."
Some vocalists broke out in a few dance moves as bright lights in blues, purples, greens and whites gave Dub Idol a Hollywood feel.
Text voting to UNCW's mobile number, 90947, was a new feature used to quantify the audience vote, which made up 25 percent of the decision as to who would be the winner. As the votes were being tallied, the High Seas performed an a capella version of "Love in this Club," by Usher.
Jordan Sasser and Karen Kleber performed an Aladdin ballad. Before the winners could be announced, the reigning Dub Idol, Alicia Copeland, sang one more time accompanied by a group of UNCW music students.
