During a time of economic recovery small businesses are an essential component needed to rebuild the economy.  The Wachovia Wells Fargo Foundation recognized this need and has recently made a solid investment in the future of the Cape Fear region by presenting the University of North Carolina Wilmington's Entrepreneurship Center with a $100,000 gift.  The gift was presented to the center on Jan. 26 in UNCW's Computer Information Systems building.

UNCW's Entrepreneurship Center was founded in 2009 with a mission to be a catalyst for entrepreneurial growth in southeastern North Carolina by linking together emerging and high-growth ventures, entrepreneurs and relevant support organizations to create business growth, jobs and innovation.  The Wachovia Wells Fargo gift will provide the center with $25,000 per year for the next four years and will help support new programs and initiatives set forth by the center.

"What makes this gift so special and important is that it comes at a time when the UNCW Entrepreneurship Center itself is being started and expanded," said Jonathan Rowe, director of the Entrepreneurship Center. "This gift also allows us to strengthen our speaker series and be associated with a financial institution that supports entrepreneurship and innovation on both a local and national level and really validates the importance of entrepreneurship at UNCW."

The center's quarterly speaker series is a current program in which top business leaders share their knowledge with local entrepreneurs and students. The program will be named after Wachovia in honor of the gift.

"The new Wachovia Entrepreneurial Speaker Series will be the feature of our annual Entrepreneurship Week activities. This gift will help us continue to provide critical support to our community, students, faculty and staff," said UNCW Cameron School of Business Dean Larry Clark in a press release.
