This spring semester, UNCW is going through a lot of changes, including a number of improvements added to campus. The most noticeable change is the new nursing building, which should be complete by the summer.

The brickwork and roofing have been completed. All the major HVAC, electrical and plumbing systems are scheduled to be in by the end of February. Finishing the inside of the building will begin in March. The building will include simulation learning space with brand new technology which will benefit our students and our community.

Another big change coming to campus is more environmental improvement to Chancellor's Walk. Oak trees will be planted along the walk to provide shade and save energy. There are also plans to use the available surface water for irrigation in order to reduce UNCW's use of potable water.

Another exciting change coming to campus is the installation of a cell phone tower. UNCW plans to erect this tower behind the Seahawk Village parking area to improve cell phone reception on campus. The tower will be built this semester. Students are already excited about the better reception.

"I live in the Crossing, and I have to run around my room or hang out the window to find a spot with good reception," says Ashley Steed, a sophomore at UNCW. Steed and thousands of other UNCW students struggle with cell phone reception on campus every day.

"It's really frustrating when I'm supposed to meet a study group in the library and I can't get in touch with them because I have no service," says Kathryn Murphy, a UNCW sophomore. "I've actually missed group meetings because I didn't have reception. I couldn't call anyone to find out where to go."

"As a student ambassador, I hear a lot of questions about campus safety," says Steed. "Parents want to make sure that their children are in a safe environment. Good cell phone reception is a big part of that."

"I believe it's always good to have reception just in case of emergencies. Anything can happen." says UNCW junior Caleb Johnson. Although UNCW prides itself on being a safe campus, providing stronger cell phone reception will add an extra layer of security for UNCW students.
