"Professional Attire? Not me!" Think Again

As a student at UNCW you might consider an internship while in school or a full time career opportunity if approaching graduation. You may convince yourself that wearing a business suit when meeting a potential employer is not really necessary. The notion applies especially since we live at the coast and most things are casual no matter what we are doing. While first impressions are very important in any kind of business or social meeting and completing research on the organization you might interview with is a given consider giving equal importance to wear the appropriate attire for the occasion. There is a term that is frequently considered by many as a gage for consideration. It is simply, "if you want to get the part, you have to dress the part".

The Career Center has a variety of helpful information to assist students with getting the right look for any business setting that you may participate in. Professional attire differs for both men and women and there are some common rules that can apply to both men and women. Common rules include:
-Remove all facial piercings for interviews
-Cover visible tattoos
-Jeans, t-shirt and sneakers are not okay on interviews
-Don't chew gum
-Hair should be clean and likewise cloths should be clean and fit properly.

WOMEN:
Women have more flexibility in choosing interview attire. Accepted choices include: pants, business suits and an appropriate skirt are acceptable. The skirt length should reach the top of the knees. Make sure that the tops and bottoms match accordingly and the shoes are closed toe and dark in color. The blouse should match the business suit, be one solid color and not low cut. Jewelry should be kept to a minimum of one pair of earrings, one strand necklace, watch and one ring on each hand if preferred.

MEN:
A business suit is preferred with a matching pant and jacket is second. Ties are a must and should be tied properly. A solid color shirt in either white or blue is preferred. Please wear a white plain white t-shirt underneath. Dark dress socks with polished dark shoes and a belt is preferred. Facial hair should be groomed and wear a watch to look professional and conservative.
